Hard to believe, but, Summer is a comin’!
Having an Outdoor Wedding or Reception in the Summer?
Here at 10 Tips for a Successful Outdoor Wedding & Reception
Hire a Certified Wedding Professional! If you’ve decided on an outdoor wedding and/or reception Hire a Wedding Professional! A planner earns her keep just by nailing down a back up weather plan and putting it into action if the need arises! Weather effects an outdoor wedding and reception in ways you might not consider–excessive heat, snow, wind, rain and even to much mud from earlier weather. The outdoor venue can also effect how well the guests can hear, what you should serve and even dress etiquette. But, most importantly you don’t want to be the one who has to be moving your chuppah inside at the last minute because of weather. You relax, get your makeup and hair done while your professional handles Mother Nature.
Specify the dress code! Let your guests know if they will be outside and should dress accordingly by specifying on the invite or on an insert.
Consider the comfort of your guests! Make sure everyone will be able to hear. If it will be damp or windy, consider a blanket or wrap on each guest chair. Hot? Have the ushers and house party give out personalized water bottles or print your program on a fan. Consider serving a variety of lemonades, teas and punches. For a fancy cocktail, why not serve a classic mint julep or a mojito? The mint will refresh and cool your guests. One recent wedding in HOT-Lanta passed out damp washcloths with mint fragrance!
Beware of Uninvited Guests! Make sure your guests focused on you and not batting away at flies or getting bitten by mosquitos. Put out Cintronella candles or bug-repellent torches.
Consider the food! Make sure the menu is one which can hold up to the weather! In keeping with the summer tradition of picnic and finger food how about popcorn during the cocktail hour? (Full disclosure, popcorn is my favorite food. I served it at my cocktail hour in November.)
Get Married at Sunset! Schedule your chuppah ceremony for sunset where your guests will see you surrounded by the warm glow of the sun. If you’re having an outdoor wedding during the day light hours make sure your guests are seated so as not to be staring into the sun!
Power Up! Make sure you have enough power strips or a generator if necessary to keep the DJ rocking all night long (and keep the lights on, food hot, etc!)
Kick off your heels! Get Comfortable (and let you guests kick off their heels too)! How about providing your female guests with a basket of socks or flip-flips to encourage a “No heels on the Dance Floor” rule!
