It’s almost a certainty that the morning after a Jewish or Jew-ish wedding, you’re going to have bagels: hopefully you will have a crackling crust, chewy center, smooth and silky cream cheese with sharp smoked salmon. For some, capers and onions join the ritual. (We are not talking about the major chain knock off of dough & smear).
We’re talking the real deal. Thanks to Polish immigrant Harry Lender, who opened the first bagel factory outside of NY, and saw the potential for bagels to be sold in grocery stores, other cities in American now take pride in their bagel offerings too.
According to the USA Today “America’s best bagels” 8 of the best are still located in NYC, but, we can venture out to the rest of the country, including one right here in my home town of Austin. Here is their list:
