Food Holiday Friday & A Contest!

bagel and lox

We’ve decided this is a National Food Holiday we can really celebrate here at MJW!

It’s almost a certainty that the morning after a Jewish or Jew-ish wedding, you’re going to have bagels:  hopefully you will have a crackling crust, chewy center, smooth and silky cream cheese with sharp smoked salmon. For some, capers and onions join the ritual.  (We are not talking about the major chain knock off of dough & smear).

We’re talking the real deal.  Thanks to Polish immigrant Harry Lender, who opened the first bagel factory outside of NY, and saw the potential for bagels to be sold in grocery stores, other cities in American now take pride in their bagel offerings too.

According to the USA Today “America’s best bagels” 8 of the best are still located in NYC, but, we can venture out to the rest of the country, including one right here in my home town of Austin.  Here is their list:

Bagel Hole

Tal Bagels

Bagel Oasis

Terrace Bagels

Murray’s Bagels

Absolute Bagels

Kaufman’s Bakery and Delicatessen, Skokie, IL

BB’s Bagels, Alpharetta, GA

Bialy’s Bagels, Cleveland, OH

New York Bagel and Bialy Corporation, Chicago, IL

The Bagel Factory, St. Louis, MO

The Bagel Broker, Los Angeles, CA

The Original Brooklyn Water Bagel, Del Ray Beach, FL

Wholy Bagel, Austin, TX

So if you celebrate this weekend by eating your favorite bagel and lox, take a selfie, post it to Instagram or on our Facebook page with the #mjwbagel and you could win a dozen bagels sent to you from NY’s finest (just in time for Valentine’s Day)!  I know Mr. Modern Jewish Wedding would love a NY Bagel more than chocolate.
