Last week at this time I was at a funeral and at tonight’s Shabbat service we will remember the 3rd anniversary of my maternal grandmother’s death with her yartzeit.
Also at tonight’s Shabbat service: in the 6 week lead up to my daughter’s becoming a Bat Mitzvah she will help lead a few of the prayers. Yesterday my son received the ultimate secular sign of independence and freedom: his driver’s license.
It is what I love most about Judaism. We have rituals and celebrations for every stage of life and always remember those who are no longer with us as we journey through them. The Modern Jewish Wedding was created out of that love.
Perhaps because I am feeling contemplative as I watch my own children celebrate their current life stage I am choosing today to showcase a Modern Jewish Bat Mitzvah!

Sarah had a fun filled Bat Mitzvah with a Willy Wonka theme. The Woodland Hills, CA event took place at the local Hilton. The ceremony was packed with friends and family as Sarah read her Torah portion. Afterward, during the cocktail hour, the kids had fun getting airbrushed hats, jumping in the photo booth or munching on snacks as the main room was transformed into a candy themed party. Then the dancing began…
